There is much to be thankful for in our small northern Michigan community.

Chief among them is that 23 local people routinely stop whatever they’re doing, leave their families and jobs to answer the pager for a fire, an auto accident or a medical emergency. They always put this community, or even those just passing through, first. They truly deserve our support. Here is just a sample of their commitment to Bear Lake – the Fire Prevention Week 2011 Open House.

This is the first of many more public education videos. Enjoy!

Bear Lake Township Fire Department Fire Prevention Week

In 2008, Bear Lake Township assessed a 5 year term 1/2 mill for Fire and EMS operations. This generates an average of $37,500. This year it was $34,000. An additional 5 year 1/4 mill is restricted only for equipment acquisition. In Pleasanton Township 1/2 mill is collected for ‘fire services’. A contractual payment is then made to BLTFD. This year that was @$22,000.

(Definition: ‘mill’ = A property tax (or millage tax) is an ad valorem tax levy on the value of property that the owner of the property is required to pay to a government in which the property is situated. The property tax rate is given as a percentage. It may also be expressed as a permille, which is also known as a millage rate or mill levy. (A mill is also one-thousandth of a currency unit.) To calculate the property tax, the authority will multiply the assessed value of the property by the mill rate and then divide by 1,000.)

20 volunteer-on-call responders are paid $10 per hour, Probationers $8.

We currently have 20 members including 7 new members and one Probationary Member  currently enrolled in Manistee County Firefighters Association training. Our county training committee runs an academy class every year. All members are trained to FF2 under NFPA 1001 and driver/operators trained to current NFPA 1002.

Manistee County, NW MI, comprises: 14 Townships, one City, 4 Villages. Located in the northwest of the County, Bear Lake is one of only 3 established Fire and EMS departments serving 120 sq. miles. We serve the Village of Bear Lake, where our K-12 school is located. We provide mutual aid to all 14 Townships plus the City of Manistee.
